Watches: Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Hong Kong Limited Edition

By Thierry Ané on November 4, 2013

After two partnership fiascos, Ferrari welcomed Hublot as its watchmaking partner in November 2011. Since the beginning, we were told that “this is no simple agreement for creating a tie-in product, for licensing or sponsorship”. No, the ambition was to create a comprehensive partnership covering all the activities of Hublot and Ferrari “both in terms of brand image and the commercial activities of both companies”. Right from this moment, I knew that the watches that would come from this alliance would at last do justice to Ferrari’s DNA. Hublot presents the perfect blend of technology, innovation, desirability and exclusivity to bring out Ferrari’s image.

The year 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the presence of both Hublot and Ferrari in Hong Kong. To celebrate this double Jubilee, Hublot Chairman Jean-Claude Biver and Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo unveiled the Big Bang Ferrari Hong Kong Limited Edition.

The most striking feature of this new timepiece is undoubtedly its bright red ceramic bezel. Aesthetically, the red colour chosen to pay tribute to both Ferrari and Hong Kong, provides a nice contrast with the 45.5 mm black ceramic case and immediately brings a “racing” touch to the watch. Technically, Hublot R&D team is the first to succeed in creating a brightly coloured ceramic. If we do not count the 2013 Only Watch Classic Fusion Skeleton Tourbillon (unique piece) this is Hublot’s first use of this patented process, making the watch even more collectible.

Like previous Big Bang Ferrari timepieces, this 30-piece edition features a sapphire dial with a rhodium-plated Ferrari Prancing Horse appliqué and an open case back with a 30th anniversary logo transfer. One can thus admire the HUB 1241 Unico movement from both sides. This 330-component flyback chronograph movement was developed and manufactured in-house and boasts a 72-hour power reserve. The watch is completed by two interchangeable straps: one in black Schedoni leather with red stitches and one in black rubber with red stitches that Hublot quick-change system makes easy to change.

To me, no watch can better exemplify the Ferrari universe than the Big Bang Ferrari Hong Kong Limited Edition: everything, from the colour codes, to the inventiveness of the materials, to the exclusivity (30 pieces only!), allude to the Monza “scuderia”.
