Flash News: Girard-Perregaux 1966 and Vintage 1945 XXL Blue Collection
By Thierry Ané on February 12, 2014
Blue is the new neutral in the cool watch colour palette; it’s available in all styles, from rugged to classic to contemporary. Girard-Perregaux acknowledges the universal appeal of a colour that is lively yet elegant and welcomes it in its flagship 1966 and Vintage 1945 collections. As a pre-Basel release, the brand presents a new version of the 1966 Automatic and two variants of the Vintage 1945 Small Seconds, all with beautiful blue dials.
There is no need to present the iconic 1966 collection. With its round case of well-proportioned dimensions, its slightly domed dial and its highly polished bezel, it remains unmistakable. For this blue makeover, the brand selected the simplest model in the collection, namely the 1966 Automatic. Equipped with the self-winding GP03300-0030 with 46-hour power reserve, this timepiece indicates the time of the day with three hands and the date by the usual window at 3 o’clock.
The new 1966 Automatic model received a magnificent blue dial with a subtle sunburst effect that catches the light and animates the dial. It is paired with a blue alligator strap of the same blue hue. What better colour than that of pink gold, the material of this small 38 mm case, to enhance the beauty of the blue? On the dial, the baton hour marker appliqués and the leaf-shaped hands are also crafted in pink gold and add an extra touch of refinement to the watch.
With its pure Art Deco rectangular case, the Vintage 1945 line is as immediately identifiable as the 1966 collection and proves that the brand is capable of creating extremely different yet always iconic designs. The brand decided to offer a new dial to a stainless steel model this time, namely the Vintage 1945 XXL Small Seconds. Although the brand used the same shade of blue, the dial of this model received a vertical brushed finish instead of a sunburst effect. These long vertical lines fit better the 36.20 x 35.25 mm rectangular case. Once again, the blue dial is matched with a blue alligator strap secured with a folding buckle but the manufacture also offers a Vintage 1945 XXL Small Seconds with steel bracelet for those who fear that their lifestyle is incompatible with the delicateness of an alligator strap.
Housed in the Vintage 1945 case is the in-house GP03300-0051 calibre. This self-winding movement with 46-hour power reserve indicates the time of the day and features a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock.
