Watches: JeanRichard 1681 Coussin Models in Blue
By Thierry Ané on March 3, 2014
For Baselworld 2013, JeanRichard entirely refreshed its watch offers. The redesigned sporty Aeroscope, Aquascope and Terrascope collections as well as the more refined 1681 line all received a similar modular case construction that allows for infinite renditions. And, ever since, Girard-Perregaux’s sister brand has worked very hard to provide interesting additions to each and every line.
With an emblematic neo-vintage look due to its cushion-shaped case and the use of a manufacture movement, the 1681 collection remains the brand's flagship offer. At 46 mm in diameter, these otherwise conservative timepieces surely make for a bold wearing and come in enough variations to suit all tastes. From extremely classic in a white lacquered dial paired with dark red Barenia leather, to very contemporary in an all-black interpretation, to original with a bronze satin-finished sunburst dial with cognac ostrich strap, to luxurious even in pink gold with black lacquered dial and black alligator strap, it seems that this interesting model looks good in all versions. No wonder the brand’s designers enjoy having fun with it!
At this year’s Basel fair, JeanRichard will officially unveil two new successful renditions that highlight the youthful side of this decidedly versatile model. With a nice touch of blue, the watch suddenly alludes to summer time and puts you in a good mood!
The first model, the 1681 Coussin Central Second Blue is in stainless steel with a beautiful blue lacquered dial and a matching Barania leather strap secured by a folding stainless steel buckle. The dial features leaf-style hands and rhodium-coated Arabic numerals. This watch is equipped with the self-winding in-house JR1000 calibre that displays the time with three central hands and the date by a small window at 3 o’clock. The movement finish and decorated rotor are visible through the transparent case back. This watch is the perfect companion for the holiday and perhaps to cheer you up on a gloomy working day…
If you like the freshness of blue and the attention it commands but prefer your watches a little less casual and a little more luxurious, the 1681 Coussin Small Second Blue may be the perfect watch for you. This model uses the same hue of blue for the lacquered dial but matches it with a rich pink gold case and a superb blue alligator strap secured by a pink gold folding buckle. The dial showcases pink gold leaf-shaped hands and hour markers as well as a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. Inside the watch beats the JR1090 calibre. This manufacture automatic movement is essentially the JR1000 with a small seconds hand instead of a central hand.
I really like this watch case with its nice alternation of polished and satin finishes and its generous size. The folding buckle is also very comfortable on the wrist which is rare enough to be mentioned. Although both versions look absolutely stunning, my preference goes to the 1681 Coussin Small Second Blue in pink gold as I truly love the contrast between the pink gold and the beautiful hue of blue the brand selected.
I truly look forward to trying these watches on during Baselworld and I won’t forget to bring back live pictures of these great-looking watches and of all the rest of the novelties.
