Watches: Hublot Dallas Cowboys Collection

By Thierry Ané on August 26, 2014

Ever since the very first timepiece combining a precious metal case with a natural rubber strap, Hublot has dared to be different and the concept of “Fusion” so dear to Jean-Claude Biver has never been restricted to the watches themselves: the brand has made it its policy to venture where others would not, to merge together the elitist world of Haute Horlogerie with all aspects of “popular culture”. One field that the brand has always embraced better than its competitors is definitely the world of sports. When most luxury Swiss brands only had eyes for cricket, golf and equestrian sports, Hublot understood the importance of asserting their presence is “less noble” but more mainstream sports.

In particular, the Nyon-based manufacture was the very first luxury brand to enter the game of football (soccer). Many competitors were bewildered to say the least and did not believe that associating a high-end watch manufacture with something as popular as football could do any good to the brand’s image. For them, luxury required a certain inaccessibility to exist but the media impact and financial benefits of Hublot’s involvements with the world of soccer, particularly with the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil this summer, have proved everybody wrong. So have the numerous watch brands that have followed in Hubot’s footsteps and tried to seize what opportunities were left in this sport.

After such a successful foray into the world of soccer, it was only a matter of time before this extremely dynamic brand ventured into the field of another immensely popular sport: American football! Today, the brand proves one more time that they are always way ahead of the rest of the watch industry as they become the first official Timekeeper of the Dallas Cowboys and the very first luxury brand to partner with an NFL team!

If, like me, you are not a die-hard sports-a-holic, let me give you some basic facts about this team so that you can fully grasp the importance of this collaboration. This professional American football franchise joined the National Football League (NFL) in 1960. Since then, the Dallas Cowboys share the record for most Super Bowl appearances and boast five Super Bowl Championships. The Cowboys are also the only NFL team to record 20 straight winning seasons (1966–85). Putting it simply, they are an American institution and one of the world’s favourite football teams!

Through this partnership, Hublot is now the naming rights partner of the VIP parking entrance. Hublot clocks will adorn the stadium walls and the HD jumbotrons above the field will feature a Hublot clock for the pre-game countdowns at all home games. But most interestingly for us watch aficionados, Hublot is unveiling three 50-piece limited edition models inspired by the blue and silver colours of the team that will be sold exclusively at Hublot’s Dallas Boutique and in a pop-up store in the Cowboys’ Owner’s Lounge at AT&T Stadium. Let me now review each of these three stunning creations.

King Power Dallas Cowboys

If you are a regular reader of Watch Agora, you probably know by now my obsession with the “King Power” watches. It is therefore without surprise that I will start this presentation with the great-looking King Power Dallas Cowboys! Like the rest of the collection, this watch is dressed in the blue and silver colours of this talented team. With their imposing 48 mm case, the King Power models always make a statement. They usually also do so through the use of innovative materials and the use of contrasting colours to create a very graphic and totally catchy design.

Compared to many other “King Power” models, though, the King Power Dallas Cowboys looks quite understated and, dare I say, extremely elegant. The entirely black ceramic case is extended by a refined black alligator strap sewn onto black rubber and secured by a black PVD titanium folding buckle. This gloomy ensemble is subtly enhanced by the blue rubber moulding on the crown and the chronograph pushers.

The dial is also a model of harmony and restraint while offering an unmistakable tribute to the Dallas Cowboys. The blue flange with its black minute track featuring white 5-minute markers brings light to the black background and gives more depth to the blue rubber on the crown and pushers. The chronograph counters are circled in silver with black tracks while the small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock alternates silver and blue markings. Crafted in black nickel, the hands and hour markers are filled with white SuperLuminova, and a beautiful silver-coloured star appliqué at 5 o’clock cleverly celebrates the five Superbowl wins of the Dallas Cowboys.

Classic Fusion Chronograph Aero Dallas Cowboys

With its generous 45 mm diameter and surprisingly slim profile, the “Classic Fusion Chronograph” is an excellent choice for any watch lover in search of a multi-purpose timepiece with a unique personality. All the more so when it is crafted in lightweight and corrosion-resistant titanium. Although I really appreciate this model in all its different interpretations, it is the “Aero” style versions (i.e, the skeleton version in Hublot’s parlance) that truly bring out the effortless beauty of this high-end watch.

It seems that the Hublot design team and I share the same tastes as the Classic Fusion Chronograph Aero Dallas Cowboys is precisely this: a beautiful Classic fusion chronograph in titanium with a breathtaking “Aero” dial revealing the mechanical beauty of the HUB 1155 self-winding calibre. Mounted on a black alligator strap like the King Power model, this exclusive timepiece with a see-through sapphire crystal on the back is secured by a stainless steel deployant clasp.

One could think that a skeleton timepiece is impossible to customise but here again the manufacture delivers and this watch is also a vibrant homage to the Dallas Cowboys. The blue flange and the rhodium-coloured faceted hour markers and hands are sufficient to evoke the football team. Naturally, this stunning timepiece also boasts the rhodium star appliqué at the 5 o’clock position but as an additional nod to this NFL team, the ring underneath the bezel creating the lugs of the case is anodised blue in perfect sync with the flange and central chronograph hand.

Classic Fusion Ladies 42mm Chronograph Dallas Cowboys

Not all football fans are male and it is to Hublot’s credit to fully acknowledge that: quite unexpectedly but very interestingly, the last tribute to the Dallas Cowboys is a female piece! With its 42 mm black ceramic case, the Classic Fusion 42mm Chronograph Dallas Cowboys remains extremely sporty and consistent with the rest of this collection.

Paired with the same black alligator strap as the other two models, it is secured by a black PVD steel folding buckle and features a closed stainless steel case back engraved with the “star” logo of the team. The dial is entirely black with hints of silver through the rhodium hands and hour markers. This time, the blue colour can only be found on the lug-shaped intermediate piece of the case just beneath the bezel.

So far, everything is very sober with this timepiece but since it is a ladies’ watch after all, the designers opted for a black PVD titanium bezel set with 42 brilliant-cut diamonds. And to make the watch even more sparkling, the star appliqué at 5 o’clock has also been set with brilliant-cut diamonds.

In conclusion, one can only marvel at the amazing creativity of this luxury Swiss brand. I have said before that in my view no other brand masters the art of customisation as perfectly as Hublot. This Dallas Cowboys collection is only the latest proof of this amazing ability to transform each and every one of its iconic models, to reinvent them for every new partnership, and create the perfect fusion of this partner’s image with Hublot’s DNA.
