Watches: Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle Day-Date and Power Reserve Excellence Platine
By Thierry Ané on September 1, 2014
With just one year of existence, Watches & Wonders, the self-proclaimed “Haute Horlogerie exhibition in Asia” has become an important date in the Fine Watchmaking calendar. Gathering 13 of the 16 Fine Watch Maisons traditionally exhibiting at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, this private and exclusive event, initially conceived as an Asian showcase for the culture, expertise and heritage of Fine Watchmaking, has soon doubled up as an opportunity for watch introductions to be spread over time.
Starting on September 30th for a three-day period, some of the most renowned Swiss manufactures will thus use this already prestigious show to consolidate their January introductions and offer watch aficionados some more wonders to dream of. Just like January before the SIHH and March before Baselworld, the month of September will therefore be filled with exciting pre-releases to arouse every watch enthusiast’s interest and make us look forward to this outstanding event organized by the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie.
The oldest keeper of this extraordinary Swiss savoir-faire, the House of Vacheron Constantin, kicks off the unveilings with two exceptional timepieces from its highly exclusive “Collection Excellence Platine”: the Patrimony Traditionnelle World Time Excellence Platine that I have already introduced hereFlash News: Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle World Time Excellence Platine and the equally-impressive Patrimony Traditionnelle Day-Date and Power Reserve Excellence Platine that I will discuss today.
For all the seasoned watch lovers, the “Collection Excellence Platine” needs no introduction but for the sake of all the other readers of Watch Agora, let me briefly summarise what this exclusive range created in 2006 is all about. The idea is quite simple: to offer the luxury of the most prestigious of all metals to the brand’s most celebrated mechanical creations. From the simplest to the most complex, the exquisite calibres designed, developed and produced by Vacheron Constantin are housed in a platinum case and enhanced by the presence of platinum dials with a beautiful sandblasted finish. Attentive to the tinniest details, the Geneva-based manufacture pairs these remarkable timepieces with a dark blue Mississippiensis alligator strap hand-sewn with silk and 950 platinum thread!
The new Patrimony Traditionnelle Day-Date and Power Reserve Excellence Platine surely does justice to the long list of models that have received this lavish platinum makeover! The elegant 39.50 mm case with a thickness of 10.65 mm features a slender bezel, a refined knurled motif around the screw-down back and a grooved crown bearing the famous Maltese cross. It is mounted on the dark blue alligator strap and secured by a triple-blade folding buckle in platinum.
The true aesthetic feat, though, is unarguably the finely grained platinum uncluttered dial with the discreet “Pt 950” inscription between 4 and 5 o’clock as on the rest of this collection. This model of legibility provides a central time display of the hours and minutes by Dauphine hands as well as the seconds. A railway minute track punctuated by faceted platinum hour markers runs on the edge of the dial. The extremely useful day and date indications face one another at 9 and 3 o’clock. They use the same flame-blued stainless steel hands as the sectorial power reserve indicator at 6 o’clock.
The sapphire crystal on the back lets you admire the mechanical heart of this timepiece. Developed and manufactured in-house, the self-winding 2475 SC calibre offers approximately 40 hours of power reserve. It bears all the meticulous finishes that are the unmistakable signature of Fine Watchmaking: Côtes de Genève, bevelled and rhodiumed bridges and a circular-grained mainplate are just a few of the elements that have earned this remarkable movement the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva!
I am usually drawn to sportier and more contemporary timepieces like Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak OffShore models or Hublot’s King Power and Ferrari series but I am thankful to Vacheron Canstantin for reminding me how stunning and desirable a classic timepiece can be. Traditional models can be extremely boring when they are executed without creative sense which is unfortunately the case more often than not. But Vacheron Constantin’s understated timepieces do not belong to this awful category. They are in fact in a class of their own: able to reconcile anyone with the irresistible charm of a timeless style continuously reinvented. Only 100 pieces of this remarkable Patrimony Traditionnelle Day-Date and Power Reserve Excellence Platine will be produced so that the watch remains as exclusive as its platinum frame!
