Flash News: Fonderie 47 Inversion Principle Tourbillon Red Gold
By Thierry Ané on September 11, 2014
Fonderie 47 continues its mission to destroy AK47 guns in Africa to create a safer environment for aid and development. Like with last year‘s white gold version, the revenues from the sale of the new Inversion Principle Tourbillon in red gold will be used to fund the destruction of one thousand assault weapons. Limited to just 10 pieces like its predecessor, this exclusive timepiece boasts a perfectly polished 42 x 14.60 mm red gold case mounted on a brown alligator strap and secured by a folding buckle crafted in the same material as the case.
The unusual display leaves the centre stage to the beautiful three-minute flying tourbillon that spins high above the rest of the dial to create a sensational 3-dimensional effect. It is equipped with three hands equally spaced 120° apart around the tourbillon cage to indicate the seconds on an arc of a circle placed above the brand’s name and just below the jumping hours window at the 12 o’clock position. Only one seconds hand is visible at any time: the other two remain hidden under the gold rifle-sight-inspired red gold frame set into the sapphire crystal. On the lower part of the dial, a blue retrograde pointer indicates the minutes on a white track with large blue 5-minute Arabic numerals on one side and on a 1-minute track on the other side for accurate reading of the time.

The open back reveals the stunning sunray guilloché pattern of the manually-wound F47-001 calibre that animates the watch. The level of energy left can be assessed by the sectorial indicator at 12 o’clock but the watch also features a lateral indication of this 6-day power reserve via a sapphire window set into the left side of the case band. Just like last year’s version, the ratchet wheel positioned at 6 o’clock is capped by a dark plate of transformed steel from a destroyed AK47. Shaped in the form of the brand’s symbol, it rotates as the watch is wound, and sits next to the ’56-3701F42’ serial number of the destroyed weapon the metal is from.
The Inversion Principle Tourbillon is a highly exclusive piece of Fine Watchmaking. Very original in terms of design, the watch is nonetheless faithful to the demanding criteria of Haute Horlogerie and should appeal to the most demanding watch collectors. Moreover, given what the brand is doing with the proceeds of the sale, the purchase of this beauty will also make you feel good about yourself!
