Watches: Ulysse Nardin Marine Diver Monaco Yacht Show 2014

By Thierry Ané on September 12, 2014

For six consecutive years, Ulysse Nardin has been the principal sponsor of the Monaco Yacht Show, an exclusive event that takes place in September in the small Principality to present the most beautiful luxury yachts and superyachts to an average attendance of 34,000 professional visitors, business decision makers and high net worth clients from all around the world!

From the 19th century marine chronometers they developed to the anchor emblem in the brand’s logo, Ulysse Nardin has always entertained a special relationship with the marine world and building a partnership with one of the largest megayacht events on Earth seemed a natural step. Not surprisingly, the brand has been extremely inspired by this event and was able to introduce a stunning 100-piece limited edition every single year since the start of this collaboration back in 2009.

This year is clearly no exception and just a few days before the start of a show placed under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, the Le Locle-based Swiss watch manufacture is proud to unveil the Marine Diver Monaco Yacht Show 2014! This very colourful timepiece belongs to the Marine collection like all the previous Monaco Yacht Show models with one exception. This extremely popular line is undeniably the perfect choice as its high water resistance and sporty look makes it ideal for nautical activities.

This year’s version features a contemporary 44 mm case crafted in stainless steel with a blue ring adorned with a wave pattern on the unidirectional bezel to remind of the maritime origins of the piece. The highly legible dial is also blue with a black sailing boat pattern and a “Monaco 2014” mention in the silver small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock facing the silver-coloured power reserve indicator at noon. The semi-skeletonized hours and minutes hands showcase white luminescent material enhanced by a red stripe just like the hours markers. Embedded in the small seconds dial, the date window boasts a magnifying glass to enhance the legibility.

The blue rubber strap of this Marine Diver Monaco Yacht Show 2014 presents the usual inserts with the brand’s name on one side and a “Limited Edition” inscription on the other side. But for the very first time it also presents two red rubber stripe inserts running from one side to the other and adding a very nice sporting touch to the watch. The case back is closed with an engraving of a boat surrounded by the inscriptions “Conquer the ocean” and “Monaco”. Inside ticks the brand’s extremely reliable UN-26 self-winding calibre.

The Marine Diver Monaco Yacht Show 2014 is a very appealing addition to the Marine collection in general and the “Monaco Yacht Show” timepieces in particular. I really like this clever mixture of blue, red, and white. This is definitely a great timepiece for the weekends, and particularly so if you spend them on your private yacht!

A little retrospective of Ulysse Nardin collaboration with the Monaco Yacht Show

Marine Chronometer Manufacture Monaco Yacht Show 2013

In 2013, Ulysse Nardin offered a manufacture heart to the “Monaco Yacht Show” series: this 43 mm titanium and steel model houses the brand’s new UN-118 calibre designed, developed and manufactured in-house. The back is of course open and the blue dial features a nice sailing boat pattern.

Blue is definitely the colour of the “Monaco Yacht Show” timepieces. This time, the steel case is entirely rubberized in the same blue colour as the strap. The dark hue of blue used works admirably with the black of the wave-patterned dial and of the ceramic inserts. The bezel and the dial also feature nice pink gold accents, a material also used for the semi-skeletonized hands.

Executive Dual Time Monaco Yacht Show 2011

In 2011, Ulysse Nardin surprised us by giving up the “Marine” line and introduced the very first “Executive Dual Time” model stamped with the Monaco logo. The brand’s famous two-zone watch with a patented quick time zone change system dresses in blue for the occasion: the dial, the alligator strap, and even the ceramic bezel put on the colour of the sea.

With a black DLC-coated case, black rubber strap and inserts and black wave-patterned dial, the 2010 Marine Diver edition offers a nocturnal vision of the oceans. Blue hands and inscriptions on the dial bring the finishing touch.

Maxi Marine Chronometer 43mm Monaco Yacht Show 2009

Ulysse Nardin kicked off the partnership with the Monaco Yacht Show with a black and gold version of the 43 mm Maxi Marine Chronometer. Black rubber and DLC-coated steel with touches of pink gold on the dial and bezel. The famous wave pattern of the Marine collection can be found on both the dial and the bezel and the Monaco Yacht Show’s logo sits proudly in the small seconds sub-dial.
