Flash News: Laurent Ferrier Galet Traveller Enamel US Limited Edition

By Thierry Ané on September 25, 2014

With a production of no more than 140 watches a year, Laurent Ferrier is clearly not the kind of brand that hits the headlines every week with a new limited edition model to present. With four different lines based on the brand’s outstanding three in-house movements, every new addition to the collection is carefully thought through.

Elegance, timelessness and superlative watchmaking are the evident characteristics of the beautiful timepieces produced by this extremely talented watchmaker who spent 37 years working for Patek Philippe. His watches are meant for seasoned watch collectors who truly understand and appreciate Haute Horlogerie and demand nothing less than perfection.

Last year, the master introduced his fourth line, the Galet Traveller, for all the watch aficionados who travel the globe and need at least a second time zone on their wrist. Available in red gold with a midnight blue vertical satin brushed dial or in white gold with a more discreet slate grey dial also featuring a vertical satin brushed finish, this two-time zone model houses the self-winding LF 230.01 calibre equipped with a magnificent 22-karat gold micro-rotor with guilloché decoration supported by a large and perfectly polished bridge.

The local time is classically displayed with central leaf-shaped hands while the home time appears in a window at 9 o’clock with a larger aperture than the one placed at 3 o’clock for the date indication. The watch is also equipped with a small seconds counter at 6 o’clock. Two pushers on the left side of the case allow you to adjust the local time forwards or backwards by one-hour increments.

The sapphire crystal on the case back offers an unobstructed view of this exceptional 298-part movement with its integrated complications, pawl-fitted micro-rotor and double direct-impulse escapement fitted directly on the balance and visible on the lower portion of the case back. The finish is of course superlative and clearly places this model in the high spheres of Fine Watchmaking.

This month, the renowned watchmaker is releasing a very limited 8-piece edition of this splendid watch for his American clients. The beautiful 41.00 mm timepiece with a thickness of 12.60 mm retains the pebble-shaped white gold case polished to an exceptional finish. It is mounted on a large-scale navy-coloured hand-stitched alligator strap secured by a white gold pin buckle.

What sets this US version apart, however, is the originality of its dial featuring the American continent in cloisonné enamel hand-painted with the utmost attention to detail. On vivid hues of blue depicting the oceans, a green and brown palette is used to symbolize the land with a clear emphasis on the Northern part of the continent. This stunning enamel work that, funnily, reminds of some of Patek Philippe’s World Time models with cloisonné enamel, is surrounded by a satin-brushed midnight blue disc with slender white gold indexes.

At US$ 79,000 or even US$ 82,000 if you opt for a folding buckle, the Galet Traveller Enamel US Limited Edition is clearly not the most affordable world timer on the market but if you are not afraid by the price tag, you definitely have the very best of what Haute Horlogerie and decorative arts can offer with this very exclusive model.
