Flash News: Chopard Mille Miglia Chronograph Porsche Club of America
By Thierry Ané on October 27, 2014
Just like its co-CEO, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Chopard has a longstanding love affair with motorsports particularly evidenced by the now famous “Mille Miglia” collection. Indeed, this beautiful tribute to an historic race that has reborn in 1977 as a regularity race for classic and vintage cars represents way more than the brand’s sponsoring of a media attention-grabbing event: it is the backbone of Chopard’s sporty side and this component of the “Classic Racing” line has definitely produced some of the most beautiful motorsport-oriented timepieces of the past decades.
In 2015, the renowned manufacture will celebrate 25 years of creative association with this 1000-mile race from Brescia to Rome and back. It so happens that the Porsche Club of America will celebrate 60 years of existence that very same year. For the 2014 return of the Porsche Motorsport family to the FIA World Endurance Championship with its LMP1 Porsche 919 Hybrid, Chopard has become partner of Porsche as an addition to their commitment to automotive motorsports. It thus seemed natural to mark the double milestone (25 years of Mille Miglia for Chopard and 60 years of existence for the Porsche Club of America) with a limited edition timepiece.
Under the impulse of Vu T.H. Nguyen, Porsche Club of America Executive Director, and Georg Bartkowiak, a member of the Porsche Clubs of both America and Germany, Chopard created a great-looking “Mille Miglia Chronograph Porsche Club of America” model in stainless steel limited to 60 pieces as well as a very exclusive 6-piece edition in rose gold.
With its dominant vivid blue colour this COSC-certified self-wind chronograph with a Swiss movement and 42 hours of power reserve is a true epitome of a motorsport timepiece. Its 42 mm case with a thickness of 12.31 mm features a nice vintage look thanks to the domed bezel, short lugs, grooved crown, and round chronograph pushers.
The white Arabic numerals, minutes track, and tachymeter scale make it extremely legible as they contrast nicely with the blue. The same white colour is used for the markings on the chronograph counters and small seconds sub-dial at 3 o’clock. The latter also showcases the famous red arrow-shaped Mille Miglia logo on its centre. The date appears in an aperture at 4:30 and the white baton hours and minutes hands are filled with white SuperLuminova to ensure perfect legibility in all conditions.
As all hardcore “Mille Miglia” models, both versions boast the iconic rubber strap with a Dunlop tyre tread pattern, this time in vivid blue just like the dial. Each model is secured by a pin buckle in the same material as the case and the sapphire crystal on the back of the watch hides a nice surprise: it features a stunning transfer of the Porsche Club of America logo in full colours as well as a “Mille Miglia” logo and the limited edition number stamped on the metal surrounding the aperture.
The stainless steel rendition only costs US$ 5,990 while US$ 21,000 are needed to purchase the ultra-limited rose gold version. Both models should be delivered in early December but are already available to order on the web site of the Porsche Club of America. A new and exclusive watch just before Christmas…
