Watches: Hublot King Power Los Angeles Lakers

By Thierry Ané on November 10, 2014

Believe it or not, but my last article about HublotWatches: Hublot Big Bang Ferrari 60th Anniversary North America dates back to October 3, 2014! It was dedicated to the stunning Big Bang Ferrari 60th Anniversary North America in tribute to the 60 years of Ferrari presence in North America. It has thus been already a month since I discussed a timepiece from this usually extremely creative brand and, like the many aficionados of the brand I was beginning to feel restless, almost wondering if they had somehow lost their magical touch. Particularly so considering how spoiled we have been lately by so many brands unveiling their last creations before Christmas.

Fortunately though, Hublot remains what it has always been: one of the very few brands that dare to venture into unconventional partnerships and watch designs to deliver strikingly good-looking and contemporary timepieces that do not hesitate to incorporate bright colours and revolutionary materials.

And to all its detractors, let me add that it is also a Manufacture able to win the trophy for “Best Striking Watch” at the prestigious Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2014 for the incredible Classic Fusion Cathedral Tourbillon Minute Repeater. Winning in the category epitomising the pinnacle of Haute Horlogerie: what could give you more legitimacy than that?

Let me close the digression here and come back to the timepiece of the day, a newcomer to the “King Power” family developed in tribute to the “Los Angeles Lakers”. With an impressive 16 NBA championships, this famous Californian basketball franchise is one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA. In January 2013 they chose Hublot as their Official Timekeeper and later that year, one of the team's most notorious players, Kobe Bryant, also became a brand ambassador.

Hublot kicked off the tributes with this high-profile player straight away and released the extremely appealing King Power Black Mamba, first in black ceramic, then in King Gold and in a lavish full pavé version. It was high time to honour the team as a whole with an exciting creation!

The King Power Los Angeles Lakers unveiled in the presence of players and Greg Simonian, Hublot’s partner from the well-known LA multi-brand retailer Westime, does not disappoint as it beautifully embodies the spirit of the team.

With its characteristic 48 mm case crafted in black carbon fibre for the occasion and paired with a black ceramic and micro-blasted titanium bezel secured by the six iconic H-shaped black PVD titanium screws, the watch exudes masculinity and a sporty attitude that suits the Los Angeles Lakers.

As usual with Hublot, no efforts have been spared in the customisation process to make this model a powerful evocation of the basketball team. The gorgeous sapphire dial that lets you dive into the cogs and wheels of the movement boasts the bold yellow and purple colours of the Lakers as well as their logo at the 3 o’clock position. Another “Lakers” logo transfer can be found on the see-through sapphire that covers the back of the watch.

The nods to the famous basketball team do not end there, however, as the stunning timepiece houses the self-winding HUB 4248 calibre. This robust movement is equipped with a very appropriate 48-minute chronograph that displays the elapsed time by a central hand on a purple and yellow track. As you have probably guessed if you are not a basketball fan, 48 minutes is the duration of a basketball match (the games are played in four quarters of 12 minutes in the NBA) so the watch allows you to keep track of the time left before the end of the match.

All owners of Hublot watches know how great their straps are both aesthetically and in terms of comfort on the wrist. The King Power Los Angeles Lakers is no exception and its main strap is a final tribute to the Lakers. It is made of real yellow Lakers jersey stitched on black rubber with yellow and purple threads and secured by a deployant buckle clasp in micro-blasted black PVD titanium and ceramic. This makes for a great statement and worn this way, the watch will not go unnoticed. If you want to wear it less conspicuously, it is delivered with a second strap in black gummy alligator with yellow and purple stitching. It surely looks more sophisticated while retaining the “Lakers” reference.

The great-looking King Power Los Angeles Lakers is limited to just 50 pieces which makes it even more desirable. It is once again a perfect example of Hublot’s incredible know-how with out-of-the-box designs and should appeal to any watch lover in search of an original timepiece that respects the code of Fine Watchmaking without being afraid of venturing into modern and assertive aesthetics.
