Watches: Ulysse Nardin Perpetual GMT Boutique Edition

By Thierry Ané on December 17, 2014

Earlier this month, Ulysse Nardin organized a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of its second boutique in Moscow. Situated in one of the most posh streets of the city, this new Fine Watchmaking embassy brings to twenty the number of mono-brand boutiques around the world featuring the famous anchor logo.

Far from being too fast, this recent expansion only reflects the success of this Swiss luxury brand among seasoned watch enthusiasts and their desire to experience the extent of the brand’s collections in an atmosphere that conveys Ulysse Nardin’s values.

The existence of such an impressive network of flagships is also an excellent opportunity to create dedicated limited editions. After the Marine Chronometer Boutique Edition in blaktop-coated steel unveiled not so long ago, it seems that this is indeed the direction we are heading towards as the brand is now presenting the stunning Perpetual GMT Boutique Edition.

Perpetual calendars have been a Ulysse Nardin specialty ever since the brand introduced a patented quick setting system mechanism two decades ago allowing forward and backward adjustments over one single crown. The self-winding UN-32 calibre currently used by the brand retains this innovative feature in addition to the presence of a second time zone, always useful for frequent travellers.

The great revolution, though, is undoubtedly that this chronometer-certified movement is now entirely developed and manufactured in-house by the brand and part of its impressive line-up of Manufacture calibres.

This user-friendly and extremely reliable perpetual calendar is perfectly showcased in the El Toro collection that combines the refinement of precious metals with the modernity of a ceramic bezel, the tradition of “Côtes de Genève” decorations with the sportiness of colour and rubber. In all its renditions, the famous El Toro model is faithful to the unconventional and laid-back style of Ulysse Nardin.

Last year, for watch lovers with a slightly more classic taste, the brand introduced the “Perpetual Calendar Manufacture”. Available in two series of 250 pieces in red gold or platinum, the new “Perpetual GMT” that I presented in November 2013Watches: Ulysse Nardin GMT Perpetual offers a more multi-purpose look while retaining the original dial layout of the brand’s perpetual calendars, including the large date function.

This month, Ulysse Nardin introduces a Boutique Edition rendition of this beautiful watch also limited to 250 units. Crafted in platinum, the new creation presents a magnificent blue dial and matching alligator strap. In perfect line with the maritime origins of the brand, this colour has long been in the brand’s collection and was the logical choice for this limited edition model.

Although both models are truly appealing, there is no doubt that I prefer the new Boutique Edition model relative to the Perpetual GMT Platinum of last year with silver dial and black alligator strap. This blue colour brings out all the subtle shades of platinum and cries Ulysse Nardin to me. It also makes the watch look younger, more contemporary… and yet completely different from the El Toro Blue.
