Watches: Romain Gauthier Prestige HMS Ten Collection

By Thierry Ané on December 22, 2014

Romain Gauthier celebrates the brand’s tenth anniversary with the introduction of three limited renditions of the beautiful “Prestige HMS” model first introduced in 2012.

Initially available in red gold, white gold, or platinum, this classic-looking timepiece showcasing all the Manufacture's expertise was also presented in a more laid-back titanium rendition last year. For this special “10 years” occasion, though, the brand came back to the traditional three luxurious versions, namely red gold, white gold and platinum and appropriately opted for limited series of 10 pieces of each precious metal.

The new “Prestige HMS Ten” models share the same understated round case as their predecessors. With a diameter of 41.00 mm for a thickness of 12.10 mm, it falls perfectly into the classic yet contemporary category. What sets it apart from the competition, though, is the absence of a crown on the case band. Indeed, the “Prestige HMS” timepieces are wound by a flat crown located on the case back.

Technically, this unusual choice increases the winding efficiency because energy does not need to be transmitted through 90 degrees. It also reduces wear and stress on components and reveals how special this movement construction is. Aesthetically, this allows for an unobstructed and extremely refined symmetric round shape for the case showing how Romain Gauthier is attentive to all details when creating a new timepiece.

Inside the “Prestige HMS” or “Prestige HMS Ten” beats the manually-wound HMS calibre offering off-centred hours and minutes and retrograde seconds. This high-end movement has been entirely designed, developed, and manufactured by Romain Gauthier, except for the mainspring, balance spring, and jewels (as is often the case). Partly visible from the dial side, it is mainly through the sapphire crystal on the back of the case that one can admire its breathtaking beauty.

Large and flawless “Côtes de Genève” decorations adorn all the beautifully-shaped bridges with perfectly bevelled and polished edges. Virtually every component bears Romain Gauthier’s distinctive touch and showcases a superlative finish. For instance, one can admire the cut-out part on the largest bridge featuring sharp internal bevelled angles, a treat that can only be achieved by hand as no machine is yet capable of achieving this anglage!

From the dial side, each rendition presents the same 3-dimensional dial with a clever composition of circles and arcs and a large cut-out section revealing the balance wheel and the distinctive gear driving the sectorial seconds. The Prestige HMS Ten Red Gold boasts an elegant champagne colour for the smooth satin-finished hours and minutes sub-dial and sectorial seconds arc. The same colour is used for the nice guilloché section with “Clous de Paris” decorations and the outer ring beneath the red gold hour markers.

The Prestige HMS Ten White Gold plays the anthracite card with the brand’s name, all the Arabic numerals and other markings in a nice contrasting golden colour. As is often the case, the dial of the Prestige HMS Ten Platinum is blue just like its alligator strap. The other two versions are mounted on black alligator and all models are secured by a classic pin buckle in the same material as the case.

The red gold, white gold, and platinum “Prestige HMS Ten” present three interesting variations of the original red gold, white gold and platinum “Prestige HMS” models. Their design is somehow more refined and slightly more classic, showing another side of Romain Gauthier’s style.

Whatever version is your favourite they all wonderfully showcase the superlative technical and aesthetic standards of the brand and are a stunning way of celebrating these first ten years!
