Flash News: Longines Master Worldtime Singapore 50th Anniversary
By Thierry Ané on January 14, 2015
As watch lovers now know, 2015 will be the Year of the Goat in the Chinese calendar but for the watch loving nation of Singapore, this year is a much more important milestone. It is indeed the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence.
This tiny island nation that is one of the richest states in the world will celebrate their separation from Malaysia on August 9, 1965 with many "SG50" events throughout the year. And this home to some of the most seasoned watch collectors in the world will certainly be treated with some exciting commemorative limited editions from many Swiss luxury brands.
Longines kicks off the festivities with the Worldtime Singapore 50th Anniversary, a model based on the Master Worldtime and limited to just 50 pieces. In the same 38.5 mm pink gold case as the original, the watch houses the L635 calibre, a self-winding movement with a world time complication.
Design-wise, not much has been changed from the dial side: the brand used the same leaf-shaped blue hands and silver "barleycorn" decoration on the dial and the watch is still mounted on a brown alligator strap with contrasting white stitches. The most noticeable difference is the colour of the day-night 24-hour disc: silver and blue on the original, it is now silver and black.
Looking more closely at the world timer, one notices another not-so-original change: “Hong Kong”, the usual reference city for the GMT+8 time zone has now been replaced by “Singapore” in red. The major difference relative to the non-limited version is in fact the “Singapore Celebrates 50 Years of Independence 2015” transfer on the sapphire at the back of the watch.
Retailing for 9,900 Singapore dollars, this Worldtime Singapore 50th Anniversary will only be available in Singapore’s Longines boutiques located at Marina Square and Marina Bay Sands.
