Flash News: Frédérique Constant Worldtimer with Blue Dial
By Thierry Ané on March 2, 2015
I don’t know about you, but I have always had a particular fondness for “World Timers”. Even though, to be truly honest, I seldom use the complication, there is a particular appeal to the fact that your watch can instantly give you the time everywhere in the world. Sometimes when I glance at my watch, my mind catches the name of one of the 24 cities symbolising the time zones and I start day-dreaming of distant locations… I particularly love it when the watch also includes an evocative world map at its centre: it is the perfect invitation to travel (by thoughts at least)!
In this respect, Frédérique Constant's Worldtimer model had all the prerequisites to arouse my interest. This 42 mm timepiece first introduced in 2013 also featured another important asset to be part of my favourite watches: its in-house self-winding FC-718 calibre that can be observed through the sapphire crystal of the back.
Despite its obvious qualities, the watch partly failed to impress me. Obviously well-crafted and an excellent value for money, it lacked personality for my tastes. The silver dial is certainly very elegant but the tone-on-tone world map is decidedly too discreet to fulfil its attention-grabbing role. The watch was definitely too “beige” for me if you see what I mean.
This year, though, the brand is releasing a refreshing new take on this “Worldtimer” that has this “je ne sais quoi” that immediately turns it into a must-have. Well, actually I do know: I have a thing for blue watches! But won’t you agree that this magnificent navy blue dial suddenly lightens the watch?
And the anthracite grey world map now truly stands out as it should to grab your attention and makes you want to use the world time indications to wonder what time it is in your favourite summer location or in the next part of the world you want to visit. The contrast between the navy blue and anthracite grey also helps appreciate how embossed the map is.
The blue alligator strap with white stitches is also the perfect complement for this watch’s dial. Altogether, the new Worldtimer with blue dial is the perfect travel companion for a young clientele of travellers who appreciate Fine Watchmaking but refuse to wear something too conventional.
