Flash News: Armin Strom Gumball 3000 Collection
By Thierry Ané on March 19, 2015
The Gumball 3000 is a beautiful rally which takes on average 120 drivers each year across countries and continents on a 3000 mile journey. For its 17th edition, this exciting road trip will go from Stockholm to Las Vegas and see Armin Strom as a new Official Partner.
For the occasion, the luxury watch brand is unveiling an entire collection of dedicated timepieces including the [116208 Manual Gumball 3000], the [116209 Double Barrel Gumball 3000] and the [116210 Tourbillon Gumball 3000].
All three timepieces have been designed in partnership with Maximillion Cooper, the founder of the race. While faithful to Armin Strom’s DNA, they also reflect Cooper’s tastes in terms of colours and materials for a perfect tribute.
The “Gumball 3000” engravings on all three models are very nice but not too present to maintain the design integrity of these refined watches. I particularly like the “raw” treatment finish used on the main plates of these numbered editions.
The “simplest” model, namely the [116208 Manual Gumball 3000] is the Official Watch of the rally and features the classic racing red and black colours. In addition to the logo in the small seconds sub-dial, the back of the watch showcases an engraving celebrating the 17th edition from Stockholm to Las Vegas. The four suits of cards engraved on the main plate (dial side) are also a nice nod to the city where this rally will end.
More technical with its manually-wound ARM12-GB calibre featuring 10 days of power reserve, the [116209 Double Barrel Gumball 3000] uses more sophisticated materials like the carbon inlays on the main plate or the carbon fibre inserts on the black leather strap. The mix of black and gold colours is also a favourite of Maximillion Cooper. Black titanium is also used instead of black PVD steel for the case of this model.
Lastly, the [116210 Tourbillon Gumball 3000] is undoubtedly the Haute Horlogerie alternative in the Gumball 3000 collection with the manually-wound ATC11-GB movement featuring a tourbillon escapement and offering 10 days of power reserve. Rose gold seemed like the logical choice for such a prestigious model and references to the rally were mainly restricted to the back of the case to maintain the overall refinement of the piece.
All three pieces are beautifully customised for the Gumball 3000 with a myriad of details to pay tribute to this rally. It is also interesting that all three models roughly cover the range of timepieces offered by this Manufacture.
These are truly nice addition to an already impressive line-up and I look forward to reviewing them in more details on Watch Agora with our live pictures and videos.
