Flash News: Richard Mille RM 060-01 Flyback Chronograph Regatta Les Voiles de Saint Barth

By Thierry Ané on April 20, 2015

I am not sure there is a single brand in the Fine Watchmaking segment able to compete with Richard Mille when it comes to releasing limited editions! Sometimes, I understand why some watch enthusiasts are complaining about the excessive use of “customisation” by some high-end brands: limited series are a powerful marketing tool when they remain exceptional enough to be identified as such but when a brand simply uses slight colour variations to release dozens of “special editions”, the magic is lost.

Richard Mille makes so many excesses in this department that it is impossible to list them all here. But to prove my point, let me briefly discuss two representative examples: the “RM 011 Flyback Chronograph” and the “Yohan Blake” timepieces. The former is arguably the most customised model of this brand and a list of all its renditions would be tedious even for the unconditional fans of the brand. I will therefore spare you this but for the sake of my argument, only remind you that in its TZP black ceramic and NTPT carbon version, the watch has already been presented in black, white, orange, yellow and this week in the not-so-yellow Yellow Flash edition over the past few months!

With its translucent composite case and finger-like bridges, the RM 059-01 Yohan Blake was clearly one of the most original releases of 2013. Featuring the same type of coloured bridges in a TZP black ceramic case, the RM 061-01 Yohan Blake unveiled in 2014 was already less innovative. But the arrival of the all-black TZP ceramic model quickly followed by the monochrome version of the same material definitely removed the exclusivity of the initial model…

Since “Les Voiles de Saint Barth” has been established, Richard Mille is associated with this Caribbean sailing race and obviously takes this opportunity to release another limited edition. The watch for 2015 is the RM 060-01 Les Voiles de Saint Barth and I am pleased to say that, for once, I really appreciate the customisation work relative to the “classic” RM 060-01 Flyback Chronograph Regatta.

Maybe this is simply due to the fact that the reference RM 060-01 timepiece is quite new and that we have not seen it in all the colours of the rainbow yet, but I somehow find it more accomplished (design-wise) then the RM 028 Diver Les Voiles de Saint Barth released in 2010 created on a model that we had already seen in all possible colour combinations!

Of course, the variations between the original RM 060-01 Flyback Chronograph Regatta and the RM 060-01 Les Voiles de Saint Barth edition remain subtle as the same movement and case are used for both versions. The differences are purely cosmetic: a white rubber replaces the black strap of the original and yellow, white, green and red indications of the dial and bezel of the original model are now yellow, white, orange and blue. The grooved rubber ring on the crown is also blue instead of red. All in all, the new colour scheme looks extremely summery and recalls the nautical origin of the watch.

The 50 pieces of the new RM 060-01 Les Voiles de Saint Barth should only be available in North and South America. If you like the watch but consider white to be too flashy or laid-back for you, don’t worry: it should only be a matter of time before we see this watch in a variety of other colours…
