Watches: Oris Audi Sport Limited Edition II (+live pictures)

By Thierry Ané on April 22, 2015

As the Official Watch Partner of Audi Sport since last year, Oris presented their second tribute to this incredible racing team that has won, among other things, the famous endurance event at Le Mans an unprecedented 12 times since 2000!

Last year the watch manufacturer kicked off this exciting partnership with the great-looking Audi Sport Limited Edition, a timepiece featuring numerous design references to the world of racing in general and the German team in particular. Tailored to reflect Audi road-car dashboard instrument panels, this 2000-unit limited edition also featured the car manufacturer’s signature silver colour on the dial.

Since the Oris-sponsored Audi R18 e-tron Quattro topped the podium once again at the 2014 edition of the iconic “24 Hours of Le Mans”, the watchmaker had to come back at Baselworld this year with a new homage to their successful partner: the Audi Sport Limited Edition II!

This time around, Oris opted for a stealthy all-black look and coated the lightweight 44 mm titanium case of this 2000-piece special edition with black PVD. The same treatment was used for the folding buckle securing the black perforated leather racing strap. Not even the stitches alter the gloomy look.

The dial is also matt black with black nickel hands filled with the same black Super-LumiNova used for the Arabic numerals. The bi-directional ceramic bezel with rubber-coated “good grip” insert on the outside edge is also black and engraved with a tachymeter scale to maintain the motorsports reference.

Despite this monochromatic appearance the watch remains perfectly legible, though, and subtle touches of red bring a nice finishing touch as much as they help with the reading of all the chronograph information. The central chronograph seconds hand and the unique chronograph register placed at 12 o’clock use this colour to stand out. Red is also the colour chosen for the “Audi Sport” logo at the 6 o’clock position and the retrograde small seconds function at 9 o’clock.

In addition to the chronograph, the calibre 778 movement that powers the watch also presents a date and day-of-the week indication. Based on a Sellita SW 500, this highly reliable self-winding movement remains hidden on this Audi Sport Limited Edition II as the case back presents a special engraving representing the R18 car with Audi Sport’s logo.

With a very attractive price of just CHF 3,9000, the Audi Sport Limited Edition II represents an excellent choice for the trendy watch lovers who appreciate fine mechanical timepieces as much as they enjoy motorsports. In fact, even if you are not sensitive to the world of racing, the references to Audi Sport remain sufficiently discreet for you to enjoy this well-crafted timekeeper and its contemporary all-black appeal.
