Flash News: Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso 1931 Seconde Centrale

Although I am usually not a huge fan of rectangular watches, there is something about the curves of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Grande Reverso 1931 that I truly appreciate. Although my favourite version remains the US Edition, this timepiece looks extremely elegant in all its renditions and is probably one of the most timeless watches to wear with a suit.
Despite the fact that most of the time the vintage revival trend is completely lost on me, I think that the little hint of retro look fits this model perfectly. Drawing their inspiration from a historical model of the 1930s characterised by a central seconds hand, the “Grande Maison” has now unveiled another stunning member of the “Grande Reverso 1931” to celebrate the kick-off of the Polo season in England.
We all know the links between this Art Deco-inspired reversible case and the world of Polo, but the success of the gadroons and geometric lines of this iconic model have far exceeded the polo fields. All over the world, watch enthusiasts praise the simplicity and refinement of this timepiece as well as the quality of the in-house movements the brand has housed inside this frame so far.
With the new Grande Reverso 1931 Seconde Centrale, the brand pays tribute to another model of their rich history while clearly acknowledging the needs of today’s watch lovers: for the very first time the “Grande Reverso 1931” is indeed equipped with a self-winding movement, the time-only JLC 966A calibre developed entirely by the Manufacture.
The aesthetic particularity of this new creation is of course the presence of a central seconds hand creating a striking visual effect due to the round railway-style track with Arabic numerals appearing at the centre of the black rectangular dial. Baton hour markers (save from the “12”) are radiating from this centre and provide a nice vintage touch thanks to the powdered finish that has also been used for the centre of the sword-shaped hands.
It is truly amazing to see how a simple central seconds sub-dial can bring a touch of sophistication to the simplicity of the Grande Reverso 1931 and create an entirely new aesthetic for this iconic model. To further acknowledge the refinement of this model, the Swiss brand decided to use a white gold case this time instead of the usual stainless steel and opted for black alligator leather for the strap. It is secured by a pin buckle in the same material as the case.
With a price tag of US$ 20,100, this Grande Reverso 1931 Seconde Centrale will only be available in the brand’s boutiques but is not a limited edition. If you are looking for a dress watch, it is definitely a model you should try on.
