Watches: Chopard Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition

By Thierry Ané on May 29, 2015

Dubbed the “most beautiful race in the world” by Enzo Ferrari himself, the Mille Miglia race sees stunning classic cars compete over four days along a route stretching one thousand miles of the most stunning Italian scenery between Brescia and Rome. Official timekeeper since 1988, the Chopard Manufacture is deeply involved in this stylish event as the brand’s co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufeule personally takes part in the race each year and the luxury brand usually celebrates each race with a new limited edition model.

Every year, aficionados of motorsport-inspired timepieces look forward to discovering the new addition to the “Classic Racing” line as these well-crafted sporty models have become true collectibles. The “Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition” will be no exception as it represents the very first model of the series to be equipped with an in-house movement.

Available in stainless steel (1,000 pieces) or in rose gold (100 pieces), this “Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition” is a customised version of the great-looking “GTS Power Control” introduced earlier this year at Baselworld and also available in stainless steel or in rose gold.

All these models are powered by the 01.08-C calibre entirely developed, designed and assembled in Chopard’s Fleurier Ebauches workshops. This self-winding movement displaying the time of the day by three central hands and the date in a window at 3 o’clock received the prestigious “chronometer” certification by the Swiss Official Chronometer testing Institute (COSC). This extremely reliable movement also features a power reserve indication at 9 o’clock for the generous 60 hours of energy it can store when fully wound.

Just like the “GTS Power Control”, the round case of the “Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition” measures 43 mm for a thickness of 11.43 mm. Crafted in stainless steel or rose gold, it is characterized by the presence of short, streamlined lugs designed to perfectly mould the curve of the wrist and a bezel featuring a black aluminium graduated insert. Elegant crown protectors perfectly embrace the beautiful grooved crown bearing the brand’s logo.

The famous arrow-shaped “Mille Migla” logo can be found on the dial of both versions around the date window and the power reserve is reminiscent of a petrol gauge. The oversized “6” and “12” Arabic numerals, typical of the 1950s dashboards, are filled with white luminescent material just like the hour markers and facetted hands to ensure maximum legibility in all conditions and a “Mille Miglia” and “Brescia > Rome > Brescia” inscription surrounds the sapphire case back.

The huge novelty relative to the “GTS Power Control” versions is the presence of a varnished dial in a powerful shade of red. This “Rosso Corsa” is one of the famous “racing colours”, the colour codes for cars that served to identify competitor’s nationality from the early 20th century through the late 1960s. This bright red is obviously the colour of Italy!

To further enhance the racing reference, both the stainless steel and rose gold versions of the “Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition” have been mounted on black Barenia leather with black stitches and the always sharp looking holes. It is secured by a folding clasp in the same material as the case.

With its virile and sophisticated design paired with a high-end movement, the “Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition” is decidedly a very appealing timepiece for laid-back occasions and should become as highly sought-after as the previous “Mille Miglia” editions.
