Watches: Hublot Classic Fusion House of Mandela

By Thierry Ané on July 28, 2015

With a third article in less than a week, people will again have the impression that Watch Agora is biased towards Hublot! There is no denying I have a certain weakness for the trendy creations of this Manufacture but the brand is also the most creative this summer and every one of its new introductions deserves our attention.

And it is certainly not with the stunning Classic Fusion House of Mandela that our interest will wane! The watch is the result of Hublot’s collaboration with the House of Mandela, the foundation created by the family of the famous defender of human rights. A portion of the profits generated by the sale will be donated to help the foundation contribute to the education of South African children.

The tribute to the 1993 Nobel Prize winner belongs to the “Classic Fusion” collection and its elegant 45 mm case is crafted in King Gold, the brand’s very own version of red gold involving platinum for a more lasting colour. It is mounted on black alligator sewn onto black rubber for a perfect balance of refinement and comfort. Nelson Mandela’s signature appears engraved on the bezel between the 12 and 1 o’clock positions and the King Gold dial is engraved with the totem of the Mandela family: a bee with outstretched, branched wings, which symbolise the various branches of the Mandela family tree. The insect itself is a nod to Mandela’s Xhosa name, Rolihlahla, which translates as “he who is brave enough to fetch the honey from the honeycomb” or to “challenge the status quo”.

This special edition is limited to 95 pieces as a reference to Nelson Mandela’s age at the time of his death and the transparent case back features a transfer of the African continent with the “it’s in your hand” logo. Inside the watch ticks the self-winding HUB 1112 calibre providing 42 hours of stored energy to display the time of the day with three central hands and the date through a window placed at 3 o’clock.

Simultaneously, the brand releases a women’s version of this model, namely the Classic Fusion 42mm House of Mandela. Also produced in a limited run of 95 pieces, this 42 mm timekeeper is aesthetically similar to the men’s version except for the presence of 35 brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel between 1 and 12 o’clock. Although both creations feature the same functions, the ladies’ rendition is powered by the automatic HUB 1110 instead of the HUB 1112 movement.

The Classic Fusion House of Mandela and Classic Fusion 42mm House of Mandela are understated and timeless as any tribute to this great man should be and would be a great addition to any Hublot collection.
