Watches: Ulysse Nardin Marine Diver Artemis Racing

By Thierry Ané on August 31, 2015

Quite inexplicably, while most timepieces lose their charm the minute they are customised, no matter how many itemisations of some models are introduced, they keep the freshness of the first creation and make us want to rush in the first boutique to buy them immediately. For these very special timekeepers, it really seems as if instead of altering the magic of the initial version, each new rendition reinforces the fascination it triggers!

Ulysse Nardin’s “Marine” model is undoubtedly one of them and even though I have seen my share of colour or metal variations of this brand’s sportier creation, I still marvel at every new introduction, wondering how I could resist adding each and every one of them to my collection!

Once again, the spell worked perfectly well with the Marine Diver Artemis Racing unveiled this week to celebrate the Manufacture’s partnership with Sweden’s Artemis Racing for the 35th America’s Cup. The limited edition of 250 pieces was revealed in Gothenburg this weekend where the America’s Cup World Series preliminary competition took place.

This 44 mm stainless steel model water resistant to a depth of 300 meters is powered by the tried and trusted UN-26 self-winding calibre offering the time of the day with small seconds, the date and a highly legible power reserve indicator.

This version plays with a very appealing deep-ocean blue mixed with tasteful bursts of signature Artemis Racing yellow. The iconic wave pattern of the bezel’s ring is blue like the dial of the watch featuring an Artemis sailing boat tapisserie motif while the hour markers and hands are filled with white luminescent material with a dash of yellow. The yellow is also used for the Artemis logo at 12 o’clock and the small seconds hand. Lastly, the “Artemis Racing, Challenger 35th America’s Cup” inscription in the small seconds counter reminds everyone that this is a commemorative piece.

The Marine Diver Artemis Racing boasts the same kind of ocean blue rubber strap used for the Marine Diver Monaco Yacht Show 2014 last year but this time with yellow inlays instead of red as in 2014. If one of the characteristic titanium inserts of the strap bears the brand’s name as usual, the other has been engraved with Artemis Racing’s logo, just like the closed case back that also features a depiction of the boat.

The Marine Diver Artemis Racing is undoubtedly an excellent choice for any watch aficionado in search of a versatile casual model with a lot of character… or a die-hard “Marine” watches collector who would like to add another stunning rendition to his collection!
