Flash News: IWC Special Editions BFI London Film Festival 2015

By Thierry Ané on September 7, 2015

Just like last year, IWC will be the official sponsor of the BFI London Film Festival and the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer is launching a limited edition timepiece to celebrate this partnership.

With just 59 units, the Portugieser Hand-Wound 8 Days BFI London Film Festival 2015 will undoubtedly appeal to all the collectors of this brand, and particularly so considering its well-accomplished aesthetic.

The watch is a customised version of the Portugieser Hand-Wound 8 Days presented earlier this year in the entirely revamped and renamed “Portugieser” collection. At the heart of this model beats the in-house 59215 calibre. This manually-wound movement with an impressive 8-day power reserve that can be assessed through the sectorial power reserve on the back of the movement offers a timeless and well-proportioned face with solely a small second seconds counter at 6 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock to disturb the purity of the two central hands providing the time of the day.

From the case back, though, the show is clearly less sober as the elegance of the Côtes de Genève decoration, the shine of the perfectly bevelled edges, the beauty of the circular graining on the base plate and the numerous brightly coloured rubies and wheels compete for attention. For this special edition, the sapphire crystal also received a transfer of the BFI London Film Festival logo.

The generous 43 mm timepiece has been crafted in stainless steel with a silver sunray dial featuring blue-coloured leaf-shaped hands. The applied Arabic numerals and the railway-style minute track share the same celestial colour just like the hand-stitched Santoni alligator strap.

As part of the BFI London Film Festival event, a LUMINOUS fundraising gala was held on October 6, 2015 in partnership with the Swiss Manufacture. Luminous aims to raise essential funds required to restore, preserve and digitise the UK’s national collection of film and TV.

For the charity auction led by Sotheby’s during the evening, IWC is also donating an exceptional timepiece: the Portugieser Annual Calendar BFI London Film Festival 2015 crafted in platinum. The watch shares the same 52850 automatic calibre with annual calendar displayed in three windows at 11-1 o’clock as the Portugieser Annual Calendar presented at SIHH 2015 but is the first version in platinum.

It shares the silver dial and blue Arabic numerals and strap as the 59-piece Portugieser Hand-Wound 8 Days BFI London Film Festival 2015 and should help raise a nice sum for LUMINOUS.
