Watches: Grieb & Benzinger Blue Chips Collection

With the extremely small production that goes with the exclusivity of the timepieces crafted by high-end brand Grieb & Benzinger, we do not have many opportunities to talk about this German company expert in all the techniques of fine watchmaking and restoration also renowned for the outstanding guilloché, engraving and skeletonizing works they carry out in their workshops.

More often than not, it is through tailor-made creations like the Green Inspiration, the Pharos Centurion Imperial or the quite unexpected Area 51 that we can appreciate the exceptional know-how of the brand. But even for the most wealthy watch collectors among us falling for one creation, there is no way of adding it to the collection as these one-of-a-kind pieces are made-to-order and therefore already sold.

Very rarely, though, Grieb & Benzinger unveils magnificent timekeepers that are not customised to a specific person’s tastes but showcase the creative and decorative talent of the craftsmen working for the brand. In 2013, the brand presented an entire collection of such jewels, namely the Shades of Grey collection featuring no less than 5 stunning models exploring the beauty of the grey colour paired with white gold.

This month, the German watchmaker renews this approach with the “Blue Chips”, a series of 5 timekeepers showcasing another beloved colour of watch enthusiasts: the blue. The collection revolves on two of the brand’s bestsellers: the “Polaris” and its exquisite engine-turned open-worked dials and the “Tulip” offering a fully skeletonised face with hand-made engravings.

The “Polaris” is offered in Rose Gold or Platinum mounted on dark blue alligator. The Blue Polaris Midnight Imperial adds the prestige of a bezel set with princess-cut black diamonds. Its black alligator strap with blue stitches recalls the colours of the guilloché dial and hours and minutes chapter overlapping with the small seconds.

In addition, two fully-skeletonised “Tulip” models are introduced: one with a Rose Gold case contrasting wonderfully with the blue and another in White Gold with Brilliant-Cut Diamonds on the bezel. Both have been paired with a royal blue alligator strap that imparts a lot of character to these magnificent timepieces.

Needless to say, these time-only “Blue Chips” are powered by high-end manually-wound calibres decorated with the highest standards. For the “Tulip” models, the watch’s movement has been carefully skeletonized, guilloché, and engraved fully by hand in a floral pattern and was coated with blue platinum. Despite being partially hidden behind the two-part dial, the calibre inside the “Polaris” model has received the same quality of finish. For these three models, the complex dials play with shades of blue as sunbeams dance across the guilloché pattern. While the Rose Gold and Platinum versions both feature a Breguet frosted finish upper dial in the same colour as the case, the two overlapping rings of the Blue Polaris Midnight Imperial present a shiny black colour.

After the magnificent Shades of Grey collection, Grieb & Benzinger manages to surprise us once again with the “Blue Chips” series proving how versatile the “Polaris” and “Tulip” models can be in terms of design when the revamping is done with impeccable quality and flawless taste.
