Watches: Top 5 Blue Dial Watches of 2013
By Thierry Ané on November 6, 2013
All year round, and not just during the big Swiss watch fairs, brands compete to release new timepieces that are likely to delight watch aficionados. Since there is no accounting for tastes, all sorts of watches hit the market: some bold others discreet, some classic others trendy, some huge others of more reasonable sizes… All it takes to convince oneself is to browse through the long list of new watches presented in Watches of 2013 since January.
However, the offer is not as heterogeneous as it may seem at first glance. Look close enough and you will be able to make out this year’s growing style trends from the plethora of new models. One such trend that has become established this year is the interest for watches with blue dials.
The colour of the oceans and the sky is a much coveted one when it comes to watch dials. We all have our share of watches with black, white or silver dials. But when we look for something a little different but still timeless and elegant, blue comes to mind. Many watch brands are thus surfing on this trend this year, delighting us with gorgeous dials in every hue of blue. I took a closer look at the blue watches released so far this year and compiled a list of 5 of the top choices.
Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon Red Gold
First watch of this selection, the Perpetual Moon from Arnold & Son is a 42 mm red gold watch with a brown alligator strap and a very poetic interpretation of an already romantic complication: the phases of the moon. Arnold & Son’s take on this complication comes with a stunning dial in translucent blue lacquered guilloché with red gold hour markers. A large aperture from 10 to 2 o’clock reveals the moon disc also in translucent blue lacquered guilloché with a very realistic golden moon (craters can be seen) and a few stars.Find out more about the Arnold & Son HM Perpetual Moon Red Gold
Harry Winston Project Z6 Excenter Alarm Blue Edition Black DLC Zalium
Part of the Z6 collection this watch features an off-centered hours and minutes display as well as an alarm function and a day-night indicator. The case is made of black DLC zalium (Harry Winston’s alloy of zirconium and aluminium) and the dial composed of overlapping discs is of course blue with a brushed finish except for the Alarm disc that exhibits nice Geneva stripes. To complement the look, this beautiful timepiece comes with a blue rubber strap.Find out more about the Harry Winston Project Z6 Excenter Alarm Blue Edition Black DLC Zalium
Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Beverly Hills Boutique Black Ceramic
Created for Ferrari‘s Beverly Hills dealership, the Big Bang Ferrari Beverly Hills features a 45.5 mm black ceramic case that houses Hublot in-house calibre HUB 1241 Unico. The sapphire dial is brightened by a deep blue flange and hour and minute hands with deep blue SuperLuminova. The blue theme of this timepiece is enhanced by the deep blue Schedoni leather strap with red stitches. This limited edition of 50 numbered timepieces is clearly one on the best iterations of the Big Bang Ferrari so far.Find out more about the Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Beverly Hills Boutique Black Ceramic
Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième Steel
The Grande Seconde dial made Jaquet Droz famous. It is therefore very difficult to renew such an icon. With the Grande Second Quantième, the brand managed to add a date indication without spoiling the century-old design of its flagship model. As an added bonus, the 43 mm case of all Grande Seconde Quantième is in steel, making the watch more affordable. The model in this top 5 is one of two colourful versions (the other is brown) of the Grande Second Quantième introduced this year at Baselworld. The entire watch dial is covered with blue Côtes de Genève (Geneva stripes) and the two rings making the famous figure “8” are opaline blue. The alligator strap matches the dial colour.Find out more about the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième Steel
Panerai Radiomir 8 Days GMT Oro Rosso
Last, but certainly not least in this compilation, is the Radiomir 8 Days Oro Rosso, also known as PAM 538. On the technical side, this watch houses the in-house calibre P.2002/10 that offers 8 days of power reserve and a second time zone indication by central hand. The linear power reserve indication is also worth noting as it is not very common. Aesthetically, the watch plays on the strong (and beautiful) contrast of the red gold case and both the satin finished blue dial and the blue alligator strap. A classic watch with a twist that will certainly not go unnoticed on your wrist!Find out more about the Panerai Radiomir 8 Days GMT Oro Rosso
The above models certainly belong to the most interesting blue-dial watches of this year. They yet are just the tip of the iceberg: one can find many other great looking timepieces in every shades of blue on Watches of 2013. Find the one that suits your taste... If you don’t, don’t worry: we are only in November! It is a safe bet to assume that a few more blue watches will be released by the end of the year considering the attention they get.
