Watches: A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase

By Thierry Ané on December 9, 2013

The countdown to the SIHH is on and A. Lange & Söhne has now joined the list of brands giving a sneak peak at their new collections. As the name implies, the Grande Lange 1 Moon Phase is a subtle take on the Grande Lange 1 to which a moon phase indication has been added. This is certainly not a new complication for the Saxon manufacture. Since its rebirth, the brand has actually presented ten moon phase models. Unlike the Lange 1 Moonphase, however, the moon phase indication is no longer relegated to the subsidiary seconds dial, it now proudly takes centre stage in the main hours and minutes dial. The rest of the solid silver dial retains the usual configuration of this collection, with the large date in two circled windows at 1 o’clock, and the sectorial power reserve indication at 3 o’clock.

Given how perfectionist the designers of this German manufacture are, one can easily imagine they wouldn’t have make the moon phase so visible without making sure first it meets the highest aesthetic standards. Made of solid gold, the moon phase disc received a patented blue coating that creates an astonishingly intense colour. This vivid blue sky is embellished by more than 300 stars cut out in different sizes using laser as one can see in the close-up below.

This beautiful 42 mm timepiece is powered by the in-house, manually-wound L095.3 calibre with a 72-hour power reserve. Thanks to a seven-gear system, the moon phase indication is accurate to one day in every 122.6 years. The exhibition sapphire case back allows you to admire its distinctive three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver as well as the decorated parts and overall superlative finish so characteristic of A. Lange & Söhne’s timepieces.

I can’t think of a better piece to start the presentation of the 2014 collection. Everything about this timepiece reflects the philosophy of this great manufacture. The design is sober and respectful of the brand’s identity but it remains new and creative nonetheless. Presented here in pink gold (reference 139.032), the watch will also be available in yellow gold (reference 139.021) and platinum (139.025). I have no doubt all three versions will be as successful as the previous models of the stunning Lange 1 collection.
